This not only applies to romantic dynamics, but it also relates to professional ones. In this instance, an employee was threatened by their boss with a very different kind of ultimatum. He had one week to "prove" himself as a valuable asset to the company. Otherwise, he was going to be fired. Just like the relationships depicted in that reality show, it's hard not to view this dynamic as too toxic to function properly. After all, if we have to get to the place of ultimatums, clearly neither party has much confidence in one another. What's the point of participating in this kind of toxic game when there are probably better professional relationships to pursue elsewhere?

Thankfully, this employee had his head on straight. He knew as soon as the ultimatum was “offered,” that he was unlikely to follow through with it. He ended up asking his boss for the weekend to think it over. Clearly, his boss was expecting that the author would agree to the ultimatum to try to show him what he was worth.
However, the boss did not anticipate the resignation letter that would be delivered to his desk first thing Monday morning. Maybe this employer learned a valuable lesson here. Even if he was never going to fire this guy, applying that kind of pressure could be a dealbreaker for many. It certainly was for the author!
